Does tinnitus always take the same form or can the noises vary from day to day? Also do sufferers have the problem all the time or can it come and go?
I get noises in one ear but only in the evening. At first I genuinely thought the noises were coming from either inside or outside my house. One day it sounded like a car engine had been left running - maybe a fifty yards up the road. On another occasion it was a shrill ringing noise and another time it was a buzzing noise similar to the sound of a fridge/freezer when the remainder of the house is quiet. The first few times I had these noises I checked everything around the house and opened doors and windows to see if it was coming in from outside but, eventually, when I put my head on my pillow, I realised it was in my own head and it was even clearer when I was lying on one particular side.
Does this sound like tinnitus? Do the noises change for tinnitus sufferers and is there a reason why I only hear them at night? Can anything be done about this?Tinnitus. Advice needed if you know anything about condition?

tinnitus is normally in the one side of the brain and can be in the right ear or left but not in both ears the condition can be treated with drugs and therapy over a period of time and the sufferer can hopefully be treated to funnel the right noise and then get rid of the rest
See your doctor and check if the problem is due to something treatable.
This group has various sorts of information and support available.

Good luck
This extremely irritating and stressful condition of the ear is usually not caused by any external noise. This auditory sensation, or ringing in the ears, as it is widely known affects thousands of people. It involves a ringing noise in the ears which may or may not be accompanied by hearing loss. Although many tinnitus sufferers can hear perfectly well, some others experience such loud ringing in the ears that other sounds are virtually blocked out. This severe condition renders them helpless as they loose sleep and concentration.
Tinnitus can be broadly classified into two types: Objective which is caused by vascular sounds in the head and neck or muscular contractions of the middle ear or the soft palate in the mouth. Your doctor can easily hear the same sounds on examination as you are yourself hearing.
Subjective tinnitus refers to buzzing, roaring, ringing or whistling in the ear which may be continuous or intermittent and are only heard by the sufferer, i.e. a doctor is unable to hear the same sounds. Subjective tinnitus is more common than objective tinnitus.
Tinnitus is surely difficult to cure as conventional medicine is not much of use. Some herbs though have been found to be beneficial like Ginkgo, Avena Sativa, Rosemary etc.
