Only the 40 GB and 80 GB PS3 can play ps2 games but even so the games get stuck a lot. Get a 60 GBCan you give some last minute advice on me buying the ps3? a few questions?
Yes it can, there is usual patches and updates for games which aren't compatable, so if it doesn't work just wait for the new patches and it will.
If you get the 60 gig it will have the emotion engine which will most definitely PS2 games, the 80 gig use emulation software and if the PS3 can't read the PS2 game format you have to wait for a patch to release, and the 40 gig has no PS2 compatibility at all.
If you are getting a new PS2 now, no, it won't play PS2 games at all.

The original 2 models, 20GB and 60GB, had both the PS2 CPU and GPU in them, so they played nearly every PS2 game flawlessly. Both of these were discontinued over a year ago, so they are not in stores at all anymore.

Then they introduced the 80GB Motorstorm bundle (which later became the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle). This one had the PS2 GPU, but use software emulation for the CPU. It played about 80% of PS2 games without problems. This system was discontinued shortly after Metal Gear Solid 4 released this summer. I've heard some Sears stores still have a few of these, but they are for the most part sold out.

Then they introduced the 40GB, which has since been upgraded to 80GB, and will soon be upgraded again to 160GB. These have neither the CPU or GPU from the PS2, and there os no GPU emulator, so these cannot play PS2 games at all. The 40GB version has been discontinued, but is still available at many stores. However, since this 80GB version is the same price the 40GB was, there's no reason to get the 40GB. The 160GB version is slated for release in November, and all indications are they are not discontinuing the 80GB system when it comes out.
