Portfolio advice can you help?

i want to major in illustration but i am not really sure what schools are looking for in a portfolio.....can you give me some advice on what would show off my talent more and where to go to research the things i need to draw?.....thank you so much for your helpPortfolio advice can you help?
Different schools look for different things, so its hard to say exactly what a specific one is looking for in a portfolio. I'd suggest contacting an admissions representative at different schools and asking a few questions. Your best bet would be giving your portfolio a trial run at National Portfolio Day at a college near you if you can. Most major art schools with NASAD accreditation will have representatives there. Even if you have to travel a bit to get to one, it's REALLY worth it for the feedback. It's even better if you go more than once before you graduate (if you're still in high school, that is) so you know what to expect and which areas you need to improve on. Their locations are listed on their website: http://www.portfolioday.net/

Sketchbooks are really useful, so you'll want to have one. As far as your portfolio goes, most colleges like seeing work involving the human figure for drawing intensive majors, so try to include some. It really helps to go out and draw random people in different places (starting off with gestures is a good way to go). You could also take a drawing class at a community center or community college to give yourself a boost. Colleges like well-rounded portfolios, so make sure you have a little variety in your drawings. Art teachers can give you advice on what to include, so be sure to ask one. Chances are, you'll need to anyway, since most schools require at least one recommendation from an art teacher.

Good Luck :o)

P.S.: Make sure you DO NOT overload your portfolio with anime style drawings if you have them. They don't take to kindly to those. You can include one to see how they respond, but as a rule of thumb, JUST DON'T DO IT! Seriously! lol
